What can cause tear duct obstructions?

Tear duct obstructions can be the result of many different circumstances. They are often caused by normal aging, trauma, as a side effect of medicines, tumors, or inflammatory conditions. An obstructed tear duct often leads to excess tearing, irritation, burning, swelling, and blurred or otherwise distorted vision. These systems are a result of the obstruction causing issues with the drainage system. What does reconstructive surgery offer in terms of a solution?

Each patient is unique so it is important they consult with a specialist to determine the proper treatment plan for their issue. Often times, surgical intervention is needed. In this case, a cosmetic surgeon will need to perform what is called a dacryocystorhinstomty, or DCR surgery. DCR surgery involves creating a new tear passageway. The insertion of a small stent may be needed to keep the passageway open after the procedure.

Tear duct reconstructive surgery is generally performed as an outpatient procedure and does not require a stay in the hospital. The procedure has a very high success rate, above 90%, and the majority of patients’ tear duct issues are resolved completely. For the greatest chance of success, tear duct repair should only be done by a board-certified cosmetic surgeon. They are certified specialist making them the ideal professional to perform the surgery.
