Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical technique that improves the body’s contour by removing excess fat deposits from the area between the skin and muscle. Liposuction can be used in conjunction with fat transfer to move fat from a particular part of the body to another area.
WHAT DOES LIPOSUCTION ENTAIL
Liposuction uses instruments called cannulas, tube-like metallic instruments with holes or ports on the sides. When the cannulas are connected to a suction machine via tubing, tunnels form in the fatty layer and allow the suctioning out of any fat dislodged in the process. The cannula is connected to a powerful suction pump and inserted into the fat through small incisions in the skin. After surgery, these tiny tunnels collapse and result in an improved body contour. Prior to passing the cannulas, a tumescent solution consisting of a very dilute lidocaine is infiltrated into the target liposuction areas.
Liposculpture is similar to liposuction, but uses smaller cannulas, with mostly just local anesthesia. Both procedures are offered in our New York offices. Dr. Robert M. Schwarcz is revered by his colleagues and patients for the work he does with liposuction. The results he provides help to transform lives and improve self-confidence.
Dr. Schwarcz doe snot do any body work, so the liposuction procedure offered in this practice is limited to the face and neck.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE
Post operatively one can expect blood-tinged drainage at the incision sites. It is important to wear the compression garment given to you by your cosmetic surgeon, and to avoid blood thinning medications such as aspirin for at least five days after the procedure. One can expect to be very sore after the procedure. It may appear that you are bloated or bigger due to swelling that occurs after the healing process begins but before the results settle in, about six months after the prcoedure. The majority of the swelling will be gone in six to eight weeks.
