DERMAL FILLERS

A patient with any fine lines, wrinkles, or creases may benefit from a facial filler or multiple fillers, depending on their facial anatomy, bone structure, and personal desires. A facial filler is an injectable treatment and is non-surgical in nature. A filler is essentially used to address the folllowing facial concerns: crevices and depressions in the skin, fine lines, and loss of facial volume. Depending on the area of the face, there is an appropriate filler to be selected with the direction of Dr. Schwarcz.  Fillers are especially effective in creating the appearance of fullness and volume in areas where there is a loss of muscle or volume. Facial fillers are most commonly used in the lips, cheeks, lower eyelids, and nasolabial folds, but can be used in almost every area on the face.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

If this is your first experience with fillers, your appointment will begin with a consultation with Dr. Schwarcz to determine if you are a candidate for fillers as well as which filler is the best option for you.

A topical numbing cream can be applied to the area being injected to make you more comfortable.  Before injecting, the area is prepped with an alcohol swab to remove any oils on the face or cosmetics you may have on.  Dr. Schwarcz begins by marking the area in which the fillers are to be injected.  The injection lasts about 10-15 minutes, after which you will ice for a few minutes to minimize the chance of swelling.  You are advised not to do any strenuous activity for the first 24 hours.  With hyaluronic acid fillers, you should not massage the area for the first day to avoid pushing the filler out of place.  If Sculptra is injected, you are advised to massage the area firmly five times a day, five minutes at a time, for the first five days.  It could be beneficial to ice one or two times the evening of the injection to help reduce any swelling.  It can also be beneficial to sleep with an extra pillow.  This elevates the head, allowing any potential swelling to drain downward.
