The Fat Transfer Procedure

Why are fat transfers so effective and popular? It has been shown that many of the changes in the aging face are attributed to loss of volume. These areas are first noticed around the eyes and mouth providing a less youthful look.

By utilizing advanced liposuction techniques, fat can be harvested from one part of the body, and injected with a blunt needle into another area to create additional volume, correct contour defects, or just provide an overall youthful look. Fat transfers can be used in conjunction with liposuction by removing excess or unwanted fat in a particular area of the body and transferring it to a desirable area.

The benefits of using autologous fat to enhance your appearance

Unlike synthetic fillers, autologous (your own) fat has the potential to stay for many years, until it is metabolized by the body. Depending on the area where the fat transfer procedure takes place, about 60% of the fat will remain for many years, and 40% will be absorbed in four months. Most of our patients admit that unlike other synthetic fillers, fat has a more natural look and feel to it. The most common areas filled are the mid-face, around the eyes and mouth.

What can you expect from the fat transfer procedure?

The procedure is very often performed in conjunction with standard face-lifting and mid-face-lifting procedures, or alone depending on the preoperative appearance of the face. Postoperatively there is usually swelling for up to one week and virtually no scars are visible. Fat transfer to the face could allow for a fuller and more youthful looking face.
