Entropion
Entropion is the turning inward of the eyelid causing the eyelashes to rub against the eyeball proving to be very irritating and eventually even painful. If not corrected this problem could cause mucus discharge and significant corneal damage. Entropion could be caused by aging allowing the eyelid muscles and tendons to become lax. It could also be caused by scarring of the inside of the eyelid secondary to trauma or previous infection. There are various surgical techniques to correct this problem involving tightening of the lower eyelid and reattaching the lower eyelid muscles. The basic premise here is likening the lower eyelid to a tennis net that is too loose and falls inward. If the problem is due to scarring from previous trauma or infections then the scarring would need to be addressed by grafts to vertically lengthen the scarred shortened lower eyelid.
