  • The Facial Implants Procedure | Robert Schwarcz, MD

The Facial Implants Procedure Facial implants are a popular facial rejuvenation treatment among patients in NYC. Board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Schwarcz can use a variety of different implants to augment specific parts of the face to create a younger and more aesthetically pleasing profile. The implants are constructed from solid materials that are compatible with the patient’s own tissue. Cheek Implants Cheek implants can increase the projection of recessed or flat cheekbones . They are typically inserted through incisions hidden within the mouth and positioned along the portion of the cheekbone to be augmented. Cheek implants may be combined with other cosmetic procedures. In these cases, the incisions may be made within the hairline or lower eyelid. Chin Implants Chin implants are used to increase the projection and size of a chin that is out of proportion with the rest of the face. These implants are normally inserted through an incision inside the mouth situated along the crease between the gums and lower lip. An alternative technique uses an incision made underneath the chin. Jaw Implants Jaw implants are used to augment the width of the lower third of the face in order to create a jawline that is well-defined and angled appropriately from the ear to the chin. Jaw implant surgery involves an incision along the jawline toward the back of the inside of the mouth at the crease between the cheek and gums. What to Expect During Implant Surgery: The procedure is performed using intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The incisions are closed using sutures that are either absorbable or that will be removed within a week or two following surgery. The initial results of implant surgery are almost immediately apparent; however, it is normal to experience noticeable swelling following the procedure. The swelling may take some time to completely resolve in order to see the final results. REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT

  • What Can I Do About a Torn Earlobe? | Robert Schwarcz, MD

What Can I Do About a Torn Earlobe? As long as the injury has healed properly, a torn earlobe isn’t usually a medical problem. Still, the look of an opening that splits your earlobe in two can leave you feeling self-conscious about your appearance. Thankfully, you don’t have to attempt to grin and bear – or continue hiding – the tear.At our offices in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, and Rye, New York, board-certified cosmetic and oculofacial plastic surgeon Robert Schwarcz, MD , and his team offer earlobe repair procedures for an aesthetic you can feel confident about. Take a few moments to learn more about earlobe tears, including how surgery in the hands of an expert can address the issue beautifully. Common causes of a torn earlobe Given that your earlobes consist of delicate, soft tissue, a range of factors and happenings can result in a tear. Fairly common culprits include: Earrings getting caught in clothing or being pulled, such as by a child or pet Having multiple ear piercings close together or a piercing too close to the edge of your earlobe Bites and lacerations Sudden trauma, such as from a car accident Wearing heavy earrings You could also have been born with a torn earlobe, a birth defect known as a cleft ear. What you can do about a torn earlobe If you’re bothered by your earlobe split, earlobe repair provides an effective solution. Dr. Schwarcz can take several approaches to your procedure. In all of the methods, he removes the skin that lines the crevice and creates a raw edge, which allows him to reconnect the tissue in a natural looking way. If you’ve lost a fair amount of tissue, he may need to create normal proportions through other means. For example, reconstruction entails inserting cartilage or skin from other areas of your body. In some cases, earlobe reconstruction requires several stages of surgery. Recovering from earlobe repair surgery Earlobe repair is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Most people can return to work and other daily activities within one day. If Dr. Schwarcz uses permanent sutures rather than absorbable stitches, you may need to return to the office to have them removed as the incision heals. You won’t have to worry about any significant scarring, as Dr. Schwarcz takes special care to minimize visible scars. To learn more about earlobe tear repair or get started with reconstructive treatment, book an appointment online with Dr. Schwarcz today or call the office closest to you. REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT

  • Types and Benefits of Facial Fillers | Robert Schwarcz, MD

Types and Benefits of Facial Fillers As you age, your skin will naturally lose volume and sag as the pads of fat and connective tissues beneath it shrink. Facial fillers help reverse this change by adding support beneath the skin, stretching it out to erase wrinkles. When administered by a skilled cosmetic plastic surgeon, fillers can give quick, long-lasting results with no surgery or recovery time necessary. Temporary, Semi-Permanent and Permanent Facial Fillers Fillers are classified as one of three types: temporary, semi-permanent, and permanent . Temporary fillers are based on natural compounds. All temporary fillers eventually break down and are absorbed by the body, so they must periodically be renewed to maintain their benefits. Originally, collagen fillers such as Cosmoplast, Cosmoderm, and Evolence were the most popular injectable treatments. However, they have been overtaken in popularity by hyaluronic acid-based fillers, such as Restylane , Juvederm, Restylane Silk, and Perlane. Hyaluronic acid’s advantage is that it provides a softer, more natural look. Another type of temporary filler is calcium hydroxylapatite, which is stronger and heavier than hyaluronic acid and is typically injected deeper in the skin. Radiesse is a filler composed of calcium hydroxylapatite and is used to treat moderate to deep creases and folds. The only facial filler composed of poly-L-lactic acid that is FDA approved is Sculptra . This is heavier than temporary facial fillers, and is usually used to treat especially deep facial lines and indentations to create volume, when other fillers aren’t strong enough. While their results are long-lasting, they may still require occasional maintenance with your cosmetic plastic surgeon. Permanent fillers such as ArteFill are made with microspheres of polymethylmtethacrylate (PMMA). They are too heavy to be used in delicate areas, but work well in places where the skin is thick and lines form deeply, such as the nasolabial folds. One permanent injectable treatment to beware is silicone. Silicone injections are not approved by the FDA and are dangerous and unsafe, especially since many practitioners offering silicone injections are not licensed. Patients have suffered severe reactions and side effects from silicone. Silicone can also shift within the body, producing an uneven, lumpy appearance. Which filler is best for you is a matter best determined in consultation with a licensed cosmetic plastic surgeon. Your doctor can help you determine what’s best for your case and work out a treatment plan. The right filler can produce a remarkable renewal in your look, with no surgery involved. • Tear Trough Treatment and Sunken Eye Treatment | Robert Schwarcz, MD

Tear Trough Treatment and Sunken Eye Treatment Tear trough deformities often occur in those who have certain genes or thin faces. This hollow area under the eyes gives the appearance of dark circles, making the eyes look tired or sunken. Some people may also have bags under the eyes, which worsens the appearance of dark circles. People who have mild tear trough hollowness can cover the area with makeup or temporary plumping moisturizer, but these approaches do not provide an effective, long-lasting solution. Luckily, patients in New York have other options. Dr. Schwarcz, a board-certified oculoplastic surgeon, can treat sunken eyes and tear trough hollowness with surgery and cosmetic treatments of the eyes, such as hyaluronic acid gel filler injections, fat transfer injections, tear trough implants and lower blepharoplasty procedures. Hyaluronic Acid Fillers A cosmetic surgeon can safely inject hyaluronic acid fillers to treat sunken eyes and tear troughs . This non-invasive, reliable procedure only takes several minutes. To prevent discoloration and maintain a natural look, the surgeon will inject a conservative amount of filler into the area below the patient’s lower eyelid. The pain is minimal, and the results can last up to two years. After receiving a hyaluronic acid gel injection, swelling and bruising may last for a couple of days. Fat Transfer Injections Another sunken eye and tear trough treatment approach is a fat transfer injection. By manually suctioning a minimal amount of fat from the medial thighs or stomach and transferring the fat to the eyelid via an injection, the surgeon can fill the hollow under-eye area. Bruising and swelling may last up to 10 days; however, the recovery process is painless. The effects of a fat transfer injection are often permanent. Residual hollowness may occur; however, the surgeon can inject a touch-up filler if necessary. Tear Trough Implants A tear trough implant is a safe, effective, permanent way to correct tear trough deformities and sunken eyes. While under conscious sedation, the surgeon makes an incision inside the patient’s lower eyelid. Then, the surgeon places the silicone implant. Although tear trough implant procedures are more invasive than other surgery and cosmetic treatments of the eyes, the results create a natural appearance. Lower Blepharoplasty Procedures Patients who have excess fat bags may benefit from a lower blepharoplasty with fat repositioning . This procedure involves redistributing the fat bags to make the under-eye area look smooth. To reposition the prolapsed fat without causing a scar, the surgeon will make a transconjunctival incision. • How Can I Get Rid of Crow's Feet Without Surgery? | Robert Schwarcz, MD

How Can I Get Rid of Crow's Feet Without Surgery? Crow’s feet can be a good sign in some ways — the more you laugh and smile, the more likely you are to develop these fine lines around your eyes. At the same time, lines on your face aren’t always a welcome addition from an aesthetic standpoint. And if you’ve spent a great deal of time in the sun or smoking, or if you’re genetically prone to lines surrounding your eyes, your crow’s feet may be particularly pronounced. If you’re bothered by your crow’s feet, you don’t have to go under the knife to reduce their appearance. Nonsurgical treatments are available that allow you to keep expressing yourself fully without looking older than you feel. Board-certified oculofacial plastic surgeon Robert M. Schwarcz, MD , and his team offer minimally invasive treatments that can minimize your crow’s feet without surgery. Here’s what you need to know. Dysport Dysport® is a cosmetic injectable that contains botulinum toxin, an ingredient that temporarily paralyzes muscles in the treatment area. This keeps fine lines caused by movement, such as crow’s feet, from appearing. Dysport can also help prevent deeper crow’s feet down the road. After your treatment, you can expect to notice improvements within several days. The results can last as long as 3-4 months , and you can come in for another injection to maintain those results. While Dysport works similarly and relies on the same active ingredient, the solutions differ in certain ways. Dr. Schwarcz can help determine which product is ideal for you. Dermal fillers If you have particularly deep and static crow’s feet, meaning they’re visible even when your face is at rest, you may want to consider dermal fillers around your eyes. Injectable fillers instantly replace lost volume, bringing a smoother look. You walk away from your treatment with less visible crow’s feet, and results can last for 3-12 months. Each dermal filler product contains a unique blend of ingredients, making certain ones, such as Restylane ® , especially helpful for under-eye wrinkles. Chemical peels Chemical peels reveal younger-looking skin using a solution that does away with the old, outer skin layer. You can choose a superficial peel, which is relatively painless, or a deeper peel, which can be quite intense and may require anesthesia. Routine chemical peels smooth out your skin, including in the eye area. This treatment may be ideal if your crow’s feet are more visible due to damaged or lackluster skin. In general, people benefit from a superficial peel every 2-4 weeks or a medium-depth peel every 6-12 months. To learn more about how we help you get rid of crow’s feet without surgery, or if you’re ready to get started with a treatment, call one of our offices — in the Upper East Side of Manhattan and in Scarsdale, New York — to book an appointment. • Dermal Fillers, Lower Blepharoplasty, & Fat Grafting for Dark Circles and Under-Eye Bags | Robert Schwarcz, MD

Dermal Fillers, Lower Blepharoplasty, & Fat Grafting for Dark Circles and Under-Eye Bags The area around the eyes is one of the first places to reflect the tell-tale signs of aging. Bags, hollows, or dark circles under the eyes can make a person’s overall appearance look tired, haggard, and even unwell. Fortunately, various cosmetic treatments, including eyelid blepharoplasty and dermal fillers, can correct these issues to provide a younger and more rejuvenated appearance. What Causes Bags and Dark Circles Around the Eyes? The delicate skin around the eyes can change because of lifestyle, diet, the amount and quality of sleep, and overall health. Some people are even genetically predisposed to having excess skin and dark circles under their eyes. Age and drastic changes in weight can stretch and weaken the muscles around the eyes to create hollows or bags of excess fat. Dermal Fillers to Correct Under-Eye Bags: Injectable dermal fillers use synthetic or natural substances , such as hyaluronic acid, to restore lost volume and stimulate collagen production under the eye. A cosmetic surgeon strategically injects the filler under the eye to plump the skin, which eliminates hollows and reduces the appearance of under-eye circles. The results of dermal filler injections typically last about one year. Fat Grafting: Fat grafting is another minimally-invasive method of rejuvenating the area under the eyes. A small amount of fat is harvested from the patient, typically around the flank or hips. The fat is then processed and injected into the area under the eye. The results of a fat graft last longer than injectable dermal fillers. Blepharoplasty Surgery: Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, provides a long-lasting solution to dark circles and sagging under the eyes. The procedure involves removing or repositioning excess skin and fat under the eyes . The redistribution of the fatty tissue keeps the eyes from appearing too hollow. The result is a smooth, youthful appearance. The incision is made along the inside of the eyelid, so the scar is completely hidden. Choosing the Right Under-Eye Treatment: Individuals who wish to undergo cosmetic treatment to correct dark circles or bags under their eyes should consult a board-certified oculoplastic surgeon like Dr. Robert Schwarcz to discuss their options. Dermal fillers, fat grafts, and blepharoplasty are all safe, effective procedures that can be performed in his offices in New York using a local anesthetic. The most appropriate treatment depends on the patient’s goals, the type of issue to be corrected, and how long the patient would like the results to last. Contact Dr. Schwarcz’s Scarsdale or New York City practice today to learn more information regarding these cosmetic procedures. REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT

  • Popular Benefits of Lip Augmentation | Robert Schwarcz, MD

Popular Benefits of Lip Augmentation Your smile is often the first thing people notice about you. And if you’re not feeling terribly confident about your lips, you may not feel as comfortable sporting your grin. If you’d like to feel lovelier or sexier in terms of your lips, consider lip augmentation . Board-certified oculofacial plastic surgeon Robert M. Schwarcz, MD , with locations in Manhattan and in Scarsdale, New York, expertly uses lip fillers and other strategies to help you create the look you’re longing for. How lip augmentation works During lip augmentation, Dr. Schwarcz injects Restylane Kysse into your lips for added volume. Most fillers contain a numbing agent for increased comfort. Side effects such as swelling and bruising are to be expected, but tend to be mild and temporary. While each treatment is unique, the injection usually adds about 1mL of filler to your lips. And the needle, which is quite small, doesn’t go deeper than 2.5 millimeters. Each lip filler treatment takes about 10 minutes, and you see your results immediately. Fillers may last for at least six months or as long as 12-18 months. Dr. Schwarcz also offers autologous fat treatment, which uses fat from your own body as the filler, and lip augmentation surgery to create the look you desire. Popular benefits of lip augmentation More than anything, most people who opt for lip augmentation are seeking a look they can feel more confident or comfortable about. If you naturally have thin lips, for example, you can reap the benefits of a fuller, plumper shape. Even if you haven’t had especially thin lips in the past, you might notice reduced volume as you age and your skin changes. In this case, lip augmentation can restore that fullness you miss, or even add to it to create the look you’d always wanted. You might appreciate the smoothness lip fillers can bring if you have upper lip lines from a smoking habit. Lip augmentation can also improve symmetry in your lips, if yours are somewhat uneven as far as volume goes. Another benefit of lip fillers is that they’re reversible. If you don’t love the end result, Dr. Schwarcz can inject hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves the filler. The injectable form of lip augmentation is also only minimally invasive, requiring no downtime for recovery. If you’re interested in lip augmentation through injections or surgery, call one of our offices to book an appointment today. You can also request an appointment using our online scheduling tool. • Lip Augmentation: The Path to Plumper Lips with Dermal Fillers | Robert Schwarcz, MD

Lip Augmentation: The Path to Plumper Lips with Dermal Fillers Lip augmentation using dermal fillers is a non-surgical treatment for creating full, voluminous lips . In the past, lip augmentation typically involved collagen injections. Today, the most popular dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which is safer than collagen and produces longer-lasting results. Hyaluronic acid occurs in the body naturally and adds volume to the area where it is injected. Other cosmetic procedures to increase lip volume, including implants or fat injections, are rarely used today because of the risk of inconsistent results and side effects. Common Hyaluronic Acid Fillers The most frequently used dermal fillers for plumping of the lips include Juvederm , Restylane , and Restylane Silk . They work by adding structure, shape, and volume to the lips. Each of these fillers involves a similar procedure and produces comparable results. Some fillers also contain the local anesthetic lidocaine to help make the injections more comfortable. The effects of the injection typically start to lessen after approximately six months. Repeat injections are required to keep the lips plump. Benefits of Non-Surgical Lip Augmentation Hyaluronic fillers immediately start to support and reshape the lips. Fillers offer a number of benefits over other methods of lip augmentation. The doctor can control the amount of lip volume that is created by adjusting the amount of filler used. The treatments can be spread over multiple appointments in order to achieve the desired results. Bumps or lumps created by normal lip movement dissolve easily. Hyaluronic acid fillers tend to create less swelling and bruising than other types of fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is unlikely to result in an allergic reaction. What to Expect During Lip Augmentation A cosmetic surgeon can perform injectable lip augmentation using dermal fillers during a quick in-office procedure. The doctor will numb the area with a topical numbing agent or by injecting a local anesthetic. Dr. Schwarcz, a cosmetic and oculofacial reconstructive surgeon, will mark the areas to be treated before injecting the filler using a fine needle. The results of the cosmetic procedure should be noticeable right away. Potential Risks and Side Effects Complications following lip augmentation injections are rare and typically include: tenderness and redness at the injection site, bleeding at the injection site, and minor bruising and swelling It is normal to experience some minor discomfort and swelling, but these symptoms can usually be alleviated with ice.
