Sagging Eyelids

Sagging eyelids, or ptosis, can affect many people, particularly older women. The main cause of saggy eyelids is the stretched skin that develops around the eyelids with age. Muscles in this area can also become weaker and allow fat pockets to form, which may cause eyelids to sag even more. Fortunately, there are cosmetic procedures that can correct this condition.

Potential Causes of Sagging Eyelids

In addition to aging, there are other factors that can exacerbate this condition. Too much sun exposure may damage the eyelid skin and cause it to lose its elasticity and droop. Disease, injury and nerve damage are other known culprits.

Complications

Although sagging eyelids is usually more of a cosmetic concern, there are other problems that may result from this condition. Vision is sometimes affected when drooping skin begins to cover the eyes. Sagging eyelids can also cause the eyes to become dry or watery, which may further hamper vision. Cosmetically speaking, ptosis is known to make people look tired, angry or more severe in appearance.

Blepharoplasty Surgery

Eyelid blepharoplasty surgery is one of the most popular surgical options for correcting sagging eyelids. New York oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Robert Schwarcz can remove excess skin, fat and underlying tissue to give the eyelids a more youthful and attractive appearance. Surgery may be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids if necessary. During the procedure, cuts are usually made along the natural lines of the eyelids so that the surgeon is able to remove the excess fat and skin. On the lower eyelids, cuts may be made on the insides to reduce any visible scarring. Sutures will be used to close the cuts following the procedure.

After Surgery

Recovery time usually lasts up to one week but may be shorter or longer depending on the extent of the surgery and how a patient responds to the procedure. Some swelling and bruising should be expected. Follow-up visits with the doctor are also recommended to make sure that are no complications that have resulted from the cosmetic surgery whether it is ptosis repair surgery or eyelid blepharoplasty.
