Treat Facial Lines and Folds With Perlane

Perlane is an injectable cosmetic dermal filler similar to Restylane and Juvederm. It is most often used to treat the lines that run from your nose to the corner of your mouth (nasolabial folds), lines around your eyes (crow’s feet), lip lines, and other moderate to severe wrinkles. It can also be used for lip enhancement, sunken cheeks, and to improve the contour of the jawline.

How Does Perlane Work?

As we age, the body’s natural supply of hyaluronic acid is reduced, resulting in skin that sags and begins to wrinkle. Clear hyaluronic acid gel filler supplements the body’s natural supply, restoring volume to the face and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Perlane is denser than its counterpart Restylane, and is designed to be injected into deeper layers of the skin. Perlane is the more effective solution if the goal is treating larger areas and more prominent and deep facial folds and wrinkles.

Treatment involves a short office visit where the product will be injected with a fine needle by a cosmetic plastic surgeon. Pain is minimal and may be further reduced with the use of a topical anesthetic. You will be able to resume normal activity immediately after treatment.

Is This Cosmetic Treatment Safe?

FDA approved Perlane is composed of non-animal based hyaluronic acid, making chances of an allergic reaction very rare. New patients will take comfort in knowing that, if needed, the substance can be dissolved using the enzyme hyaluronidase.

Side effects are temporary and may include redness and swelling around the injection site. This typically disappears within a few days and the site can be covered with makeup if desired.

Occasionally, one to two days after treatment, patients experience mild swelling and bruising. This is largely dependent on the location of the treatment and the amount of filler that was used. Avoiding aspirin, ibuprofen, and other supplements one to two days prior will help reduce your chance of bruising. Your doctor may also recommend other treatments to help speed up the healing process.

As with any injectable treatment, it is recommended that you seek a qualified cosmetic plastic surgeon with a solid understanding of proper technique and safety issues. Dr. Schwarcz offers such treatment and care in both of his New York practices, including Scarsdale and Manhattan.

Is Perlane Right for Me?

Results are noticeable immediately after treatment and typically last up to six months. Follow-up treatments are needed every six to twelve months thereafter. During follow-up treatments, less of the product is usually needed to maintain the desired results.

Perlane can be used in conjunction with Botox, other dermal fillers, and laser treatments. Your doctor may suggest a combination of treatments involving advanced layer techniques in order to achieve the overall desired results.
