Corticosteroid Injections to Treat Scars

Most injuries to the skin will result in scarring. Scarring is actually part of the healing process in which the body produces collagen to help regenerate the skin at the wound site. Unfortunately, scars can sometimes become a permanent fixture on the skin. Keloid scars are one particular form of scarring that extends beyond the wound site and grow discolored, raised, and become permanent more often than typical scars. Scars, while harmless, can be unsightly and make someone self-conscious of the location of his or her scars.

Luckily, there are reconstructive techniques that can help diminish the appearance of scar tissue. One of these is a course of specially formulated corticosteroid injections, which can help minimize the appearance and structure of scar tissue.

How corticosteroid injections treat scars

The specially formulated treatment is proven to be effective on small scars and has minimal side effects. It is non-invasive and results can be seen after only a few treatments. While topical creams have been proven ineffective and many other treatments have shown negative or mixed results, steroid treatment has surfaced as one of the best treatments for keloid scarring.

While it is not always possible to completely eradicate the scar tissue, this treatment can greatly diminish the appearance of scarring. It’s important to note that a scar that is currently healing should not be altered in any way, and only scars that have already healed and become a permanent fixture are eligible to be treated.
