Correct Loose, Sagging Eyelids with Blepharoplasty

One of the first signs of aging is usually evident in the eyes. Loose, sagging eyelids, extra fold on the upper eyelids, puffy fat deposits in the upper and lower eyelids, under eye bags, and fine wrinkles can all affect a person’s appearance but can be treated by eyelid blepharoplasty. Vision can also be impaired by excess skin on the upper eyelids. Depending on the exact problem, there are a variety of eyelid surgeries and/or treatments that can offer solutions.

To see if you qualify for the blepharoplasty procedure, otherwise known as eyelid surgery, contact your cosmetic plastic surgeon today. Since this procedure concerns the eyes, it would be even better to consult with a cosmetic surgeon who is also an ophthalmologist to perform the procedure. Dr. Schwarcz of New York City is renowned for his work and mastery of eye surgeries which is not limited to the blepharoplasty surgery. The surgery is performed in the office, with local anesthesia and IV sedation and generally lasts about forty five minutes. However, the procedure can exceed that time depending on the needs of the patient as well as his or her symptoms and condition.

What you can do prior to surgery

To prepare for eyelid surgery, it is wise to get a physical checkup. Ensuring good health will ensure that you avoid any complication from the sedation or the incisions. It is absolutely necessary to quit smoking at least a few weeks before surgery. Also, don’t forget to consult with your surgeon about any medications you may be taking that can potentially interfere with surgery and recovery.

What can you expect from blepharoplasty surgery?

The surgery itself is not complicated. An incision is made in the crease of the upper eyelids extracting fat, and cutting extra skin, concealing any scar visibility after surgery. When correcting lower eyelids, your cosmetic surgeon will make an incision below the eyelash line and extract fat and skin tissue, using surgical tape to close the incision.

Most of our patients can return to normal life within three to five days after removing the stitches. They often return to a full schedule or work after ten days. The bruising, swelling, and the feeling of tightness around the eyelids will go away within two to four weeks. The results of the eyelid surgery can be observed approximately one month after surgery, where you will see a youthful cheerful look around the eye. You may not wear contact lenses for two weeks to avoid any irritation or sensitivity to the eyes.
